This 16oz Ball Hammer from Vaughn is a great value. First off, it's made in good old USA, State A. I was surprised by the beautiful packaging it came in. I've ordered many other tools that are much more expensive and don't come in such a pretty box. The hickory handle is smooth, perfectly shaped, with no cracks. It seems to have a much lighter polish than other brands I've seen. This makes it easier to remove before I oil the pen. I think I'll use linseed oil. Dries longer but penetrates deeper into the wood. I know Vaughn makes a Craftsman version of this hammer, but this handle looks a little smoother with no cracks or deep grain marks. All of the Craftsman hammers I reviewed had deep spots in the grain that can develop into cracks over time if not properly cared for. I only wanted to buy the Craftsman for the easy money-back guarantee, but it costs about 30% more and the lifetime warranty might not make much of a difference if Sears can't handle its bankruptcy problem. I went for the cheaper option and was pleasantly surprised that it looks better than the more expensive Craftsman. Very happy with my purchase.
