I was very nervous about using this on my Rat Terrier at first as I have never used a trainer. I read Manuel for the first time and was very satisfied with its content. 2. I tested the collar on myself which seemed only fair. I will say level 1 for the shock will be as high as you probably need as he had good flash. Then I tried level 5 and it is clearly not needed. I think 9 as the top tier is pretty painful. If you are using this on a small dog 15lbs or less I can't imagine you needing to go past level 3. I tested the vibration mode and found it to be best set to level 5. This is a very high vibration level value. The collar that comes with it is very long. Make sure to put it on your dog and give yourself some extra length before clipping. The material used for the collar is well cut leaving no jagged edges. Now for the big test as my dog Ace is 2 years old and a Rat Terrier. On walks he goes completely nuts and will do nothing but eat every squirrel and rabbit he sees. During the first test I told myself that I would only use the beep. Surprisingly, that was all it took. He stopped and looked at me "what the hell?" and I told him to come over. To my surprise, he did it quickly. On the second day I decided to try the vibration and see how it works. My ace dog is not afraid of cars and I knew he would try to get on one of them if the opportunity presented itself. It's bad to trick him but my daughters lost their last dog to a car and it won't happen again. Of course, the ace pulled on his tight leash without hesitation. I firmly said "no" and used vibrations. He stopped dead in his tracks and immediately returned to me. I'm very happy with the short-term results we're having. I hope I never have to shock Ace, and I see that's only necessary as we transition to off-leash training. I intend to do my best to stick with the mood at level 5 as it really gets his attention and works. I think it's all said and done, I spent $42. I will definitely buy another one in the future if I ever need it. I would recommend practicing with the device and making sure you take everything off before using it on your dog. It's not difficult to work with and is pretty self-explanatory. Changing the vibration and shock levels is done separately, so remember it's the right one. It's very easy to understand when you test the remote as it tells you the level you're at. The remote control has a nice fuse on the side to avoid accidents. Just swipe up or down to turn it on or off. When it's locked, a nice little red padlock icon will appear on the screen. When you see the level setting depends on which button mode you are using. This really isn't a problem if you're looking for help training your dog. I wish I had learned this about a year ago!
