Review on DBSF115 2 Inch Diamond Sharpening Stone by Smiths by Zach Flores

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Higher metal removal rate expected

This stone works well but I was expecting faster metal removal from a rough diamond stone. That means it does its job, but with more print/surface passes than I expected. For this evaluation, I worked with nearly 1% carbon steels like 1095 and Carbon V. This stone is a good complement to the same size thin stone also made by Smith. With these two tools, you can get decently sharp edges on knives and tools, even if you have to start with relatively blunt edges, but if you're looking for razor-sharp edges, you'll need to sharpen other finer-grained tools. The length of 11 1/2 is a definite plus for large kitchen knives. If you frequently sharpen edges that require more than one touch-up, consider investing in a belt sander, higher grit belts, and a leather belt/buffing compound. Depending on where you buy these components, the investment isn't all that different from a few of these bricks, and this setup runs a lot faster and will undoubtedly last a lot longer. I'm a bit worried that the diamond surfaces will wear out before I can get enough use out of them.

Pros
