Cost, Quality, Applications and Gifts

Caran d'Ache manufactures an exemplary line of products for professional artists, encompassing a variety of colored pencils including the Pablo line. These wonderful pens are available in sets of 12, 18, 30, 40, 80 and 120 and offer a wide range of beautiful colours. work and also provide a smooth, consistent application. I find these pens work best on surfaces with a small tip to enhance their ability to blend and layer, resulting in rich color payoff and smooth transitions. A lot of people seem to be asking to compare Pablo pencils and Prismacolor pencils, but they are completely different in many ways. The most common question seems to be that Caran d'Ache Pablo colored pencils are as buttery smooth and creamy as Prismacolor Premier and the answer is no. I find that the Prismacolor pen cores are wax based and really very soft which gives a rich color payoff without having to apply multiple coats to blend and saturate the color. Pablos are oil based and have a harder core, more like Polychrome, which is beneficial for fine detail work. I learned how to stack multiple layers of light on top of each other to blend and create color saturation and the result is nice and smooth. I think it gives my work more depth and I love the effects. I don't mind how much time or effort it takes to create this effect, but I'm not sure I would be inclined to put the time and effort into painting or everyday chores. However, this is by far one of my favorite colored pencils, I just wish they were a little more economical. It is important to note that Caran d'Ache Pablo's colored pencils are a permanent medium that does not contribute to erasing. This makes them very lightfast indeed, which must be taken into account when classifying 'professional' artist supplies and consumables. They want and expect in the ordered product. According to Caran d'Ache, their one* rating lasts from 8 to 25 years and their 3*** rating up to 100 years, and this lightfastness is a factor in their price. If you're on a budget but want to try these crayons, you can choose from a set of 12 or 18, which actually give you a wide range of colors thanks to their blending and layering properties. These pens are beautiful but expensive so I wouldn't recommend them for "coloring in", educational purposes or for children unless you plan on framing and displaying something for years to come. I keep mine for commissions or for sale and use more practical and affordable options for everyday color sketches and layouts. These crayons are beautiful, work well and are fun to work with. I have worked with them for many years and would highly recommend Caran d'Ache Pablo colored pencils to professional artists and anyone on a budget!
