When I ordered this I used Prime in case it doesn't work. I did a lot of research on this before buying and this was basically the only complaint about it. I wasn't spared, mine didn't work, when it arrived I applied for a replacement. It was the Christmas holidays and it took about a week for the replacement to arrive. So I removed the cover and found that the wire going through the top plate had come loose. Soldered cables and everything worked. I suspect that most complaints about human malfunctions could have been avoided if these devices had been tested to ensure they were working correctly before shipping them to the end customer. I think the boat ride can put a lot of stress on vulnerable areas. Otherwise, I did some research when removing the lid. It's made of high quality branded components, I've seen Toshiba, TI, Sanyo to name a few. So if you are familiar with electronics and can follow the diagram, buy it. If not, use Revain Prime and swap out if it doesn't work. Since this works very well, it is a non-contact high frequency start and not a pilot arc. You must have a clean area to start cutting as opposed to a pilot arc burning through rust or paint to start plasma cutting. The smallest amount of conductive metal is required to start cutting, after which it will continue cutting unless you try to cut too fast. .
