We have an open plan living space with a kitchen (south east corner), dining room (south west corner) and living room. The position of the TV with a bay window causes a lot of glare on the screen from the street lamp. The living room windows face west, so they also add to the screen glare at the end of the day when the sun goes down. Not only do we buy them for use when daylight is causing glare on the TV screen, we are a family member with the condition. this causes sensitivity to light, which can sometimes be extreme. Being able to block out more street lights helps reduce the discomfort. We wanted to keep our designer window blinds in place, so we decided to do an 'outside' installation of these blackout curtains. Full blackout wasn't our goal, so we did NOT order it as the company recommends for 100% blackout. The description clearly states that an 'outdoor' installation requires the purchase of a 3-6 inch wider window, as well as 'please select an OUTDOOR installation if you want 100% blackout'. where the windows are angled and didn't want the curtains to be too wide to cause problems there. They actually stick out about 2 3/4" after we installed them. We got the width based on our "best guess". " Chosen to avoid problems installing around bay windows and knowing we don't need full blackout. The size we chose by choosing this option allows the blackout material itself to adhere about 1/2 inch to each side of each window. The installation was easy. While mounting it in a bay window angle was a challenge, this is a window design issue and has nothing to do with the product itself. Likewise, it was difficult to mount it in the bay window behind our kitchen sink and faucet. We were grateful that these curtains were made to be so light easy to assemble The photo shows how well they block light for our purposes ki. They would block much more if purchased 3-6 inches wider than the window as the manufacturer recommends for complete blackout. Blackout curtains hidden behind our drapes when we need to block outside light. UPDATE December 27, 2019: Completed project is shown in photos with curtain rods and drapes installed to hide blackout curtains when not in use. couldn't be happier with the finished look. No one will know there are darker shades unless we use them. The blinds have a slight odor (plastic, chemical) that will fade and will probably fade faster with more use of the blinds. Adjusting the blinds we felt it all the time, now it's only when we lower the blinds and not nearly so strong as when adjusting the blinds initial installation.
