My application: home theater, Polk Audio "bookshelf" speakers rated for 20W RMS continous @ 8 ohms resistance, powered by 6A,19V laptop power supply, fed by audio output from a Behringer mini equalizer. I've been struggling for years to keep an old Yamaha 100W stereo amp working on this system, but finally got sick of jerking around with one side of it cutting out, and other symptoms of age. That amp is now headed for the "e-waste" pile, and good riddance. This "Class D" amp (high efficiency/low heat + high level of digital signal processing) DOES NOT INCLUDE a power supply, which may either be purchased separately, or you can use an old laptop power supply you've got sitting around, as long as it has a 5mm barrel plug (the most common type). This isn't a bad thing, because it allows you to choose a power supply that works best for your particular application/speakers. Don't worry about overdriving your speakers . volume control alone will usually prevent that, and speakers are most frequently "blown" by being underpowered, not overpowered. Always better to have a little too much power than not enough. The output wattage/volume of the amp depends entirely on the amount of power being sent to it by the power supply. See the product description for a table showing wattage values by power supply voltage. The manufacturer "recommends" anything from 17V to 22V (that puts you square in the mid-to-high range of the amp's capacity); that's right in the sweet spot of power supplies common to most laptop computers, and most of those come equipped with the equally commonplace 5mm barrel plug that fits in the power jack for this amp. However, note that ultimate volume/wattage is determined by combination of voltage AND amperage . higher voltage/amperage = higher amp output, and generally speaking, the cost of your power supply will depend mainly on the amperage part. For example, a 19V, 6A supply will cost around $40, while a 19V, 3A supply costs less than half that . around $10-15.I swapped this amp/my existing laptop power supply out for the old amp in minutes. The RCA type input jacks are perfect for my app/wiring set up, and the speaker terminals can accept standard u-clip connectors, bare wire threaded through the posts, or banana plugs. Thank you, Nobsound! I also like the simple, one-knob volume control and toggle type power switch . another perfect fit for my set up.The output doesn't have what I'd call "pro audio" clarity, but I didn't expect, or pay for that either. The input source we use most often is from a Blu-ray player connected to a cable network, and that audio has already been converted from optical/digital to analog once, so by the time it travels through this amp and gets to my speakers, the signal has been "processed" twice, and something ALWAYS gets lost in these digital-to-analog conversions. The audio from direct playback of Blu-ray and DVD discs is better -- only one digital-to-analog conversion happening there. This amp, combined with my existing power supply and speakers provides MORE than enough "oomph" for my use. At only 1/3 volume, my wife starts complaining it's too loud, so for me, that's "just right." I get to really crank it when she isn't around. Nice little amp. Reasonable price. Me likee.
