Review on πŸ”₯ First Alert SCO500B: Wireless Interconnected Photoelectric Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Combo Alarm with Voice and Location Detection by Joel Norfork

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Loud, easy to install, difficult to program

Installation was relatively quick and easy - when I found out the previous owner had activated the tamper lock on my old one I had to google how to open it . Lesson: If you decide to install tamper evident pins, be sure to leave a note/instructions in your manuals to help for ten years or more when they are next replaced. Synchronizing with other alarms in the system was quick and easy, especially as I did this with both alarms in hand prior to installation. However, programming the location of the "Voice" alarm is painful. The alarm only has its own loud voice, which it uses when announcing the location during programming. I like that the alarm clock is overall loud, but it's powerful enough that you could damage your hearing while programming if you're not wearing earplugs! The programming process is made even more difficult by the fact that there is only one button on the device. Programming is done by holding the button down while inserting the battery and not releasing until the correct position is heard. Unfortunately he kept thinking I would let him go after he played a location or two before I finally gave up on proper programming. Considering the cost of these units, could they make it a little more user-friendly? All they need is to add an extra little button dedicated to programming the position on these things. And possibly an additional firmware instruction to turn the volume down when programming and/or testing so you don't need hearing protection. WARNING: This item (like all smoke alarms) is considered "Hazardous Goods" and therefore CANNOT BE RETURNED. This is not pointed out either on the product page or in the ordering process. (I did not have to return this item, but I did have to return another one in the same order due to an unexpected [missing] wiring issue in one of my existing alarms).
