Overview 2020: After buying ECOGARD for several years due to the lower price and almost identical product, I bought a MANN filter to compare the quality. The MANN filter is exactly the same except for 50 pleats and only 1 spacer versus 48 pleats and 2 spacers for ECOGARD. Overall the ECOGARD build seems better than MANN which is the standard OEM filter for VAG. They are so close that you don't need to be smart - just buy what's cheaper. Both filters were used interchangeably and I have now driven over 200,000 miles with regular synthetic oil and filter changes. If you want a fancy filter look for FRAM Ultra Synthetic which is very durable and used with distinct and multiple layers for high mileage intervals. If you already jack the car you can change the filter and remove contaminants along with the oil, so I recommend ECOGUARD.Canada-like Fram filters. They appear to be of the same quality as Mann filters because they have 48 pleats, are of similar paper material, and are held in place by fused foam at the holes. They come with gaskets, I'm happy with that. Judging by the look and feel, I don't think they should be inferior to Mann filters. I'm trying this because I've used Fram long life filters and haven't changed the filter on two oil changes, so I want to compare and contrast different experiences.
