All speakers are difficult to adjust. The bail can absolutely detach from the spool. There is a screw on each side that holds the plastic pins that connect the spool to the bracket and allow it to spin. Unscrew these 2 screws, pull out the pins, remove the bracket, attach the bracket to the ceiling, reinsert these pins through the bracket into the drum and reinstall the 2 screws. Please. Anyway, this device is ok, it's cheaper than my last one for about the same price. I don't like that these hinge pins are plastic and not metal, I don't see them holding up over time. As others have said, the locking mechanism is capricious. The coil inside, which winds the cable back into the housing, also seems rather weak compared to my last one. But it works. Although of course it's cheap.
