High quality leather for my steering wheel

I haven't seen it before, but looks like it. The top of my handlebars literally fell apart from years of use. I tried leather foil which stuck well but it didn't look good and eventually started to peel off. I've also tried regular cases but didn't like the look or the thickness. I bought this leather item based on other positive reviews, it is 2mm thick genuine leather (no PU or vinyl) and is what I consider tooling leather. Thinner sewing material would tear for my purpose. Basically I measured the required width and length, cut the leather, then poke holes about 1/8 inch apart and off the edge. I also bought a 2mm skein of waxed thread (cotton thread doesn't even work in a square) and leather needles. For the steering wheel applique I used a baseball stitch (many YouTube videos show how to do this). You should pull each st taut, then after a few rows with the crochet hook, come back and tighten each st again. Be sure to tie the seams on both sides of the original steering wheel leather. This is a slightly thicker but nice durable leather that will last forever. As most people say, take your time and do it right, you will be happy with your results. It took me 2-3 hours to sew the bodice. I'm not a tailor, just logical and didn't want to buy a new steering wheel for €250.

Pros
  • Leathercraft
Cons
  • Slightly torn
