I bought this primarily to monitor my pickup battery for stray discharge. When I checked the battery status over the weekend, I felt that the battery was draining more than I thought during the work week. I only have 11 miles (one way) to work so I wanted to know if that would be enough to fully charge the battery. Of course there's the trip computer, radio presets and who knows what else drains the battery when the car is off. During monitoring when the car is off I sometimes see a voltage drop, is there some kind of on-board monitoring? Of course, this little gem showed me exactly what I wanted to see and yes, I lost a little more energy than I should have. In the end I found that the top of my battery was conducting current between the positive and negative terminals, although it was nice and clean (the new battery was too), it had some kind of film on it that was causing leakage. Some baking soda, some fat and BAM! no more stock. Battery voltage is not as low as it used to be after night and day inactivity. This little tester quickly helped me find my problem before it became a big problem. Over time my battery would no doubt die prematurely due to long periods of under-charging. Thanks to an inexpensive gadget with a socket! Accuracy is always questionable with these crappy little devices. I have a NIST calibrated Fluke 87 True RMS meter and didn't find this little tester to be that crappy as it stays within 0.02 volts across the all important 12-14 volt range. Pretty good for the price of this thing. The head rotates well and stays in place so I always have a good viewing angle while riding. I have a Ford Ranger and it can be quite stiff when hitting bumps in the road, the pan head never moved or bounced out of place. My auxiliary 12 volt outlet (not the cigarette lighter) stays on all the time and draws negligible power. I haven't measured the amount, but for a day or night it's too low to really matter for a large truck battery. At least not as much as my little stash of parasites. Now I just jump out when I park. I look forward to hooking it up to my boat next summer and seeing how my starting and trolling motor batteries perform on the water. All in all I've had this thing for a few months now and I'm very happy with it. I would buy another one if I ever broke it. Now that I have it every day, I'm getting used to seeing what the truck alternator outputs under different conditions. Lights on, lights off, fog lights, turn signals, acceleration, brakes, etc. If I had an electrical problem I would know what the alternator is putting out and where the battery is normally located for comparison and troubleshooting. Since my new battery slowly drains over time, I know in advance exactly how much and when it needs servicing so I can spoil it a little. This is a wet cell battery so it needs some distilled water, regular balancing and cell testing and this will let me know of any signs well before failure creeps in. I'd say it's a must-read for those of us who want to know a little bit more about what's going on under the hood.
