Review on πŸ“ Precision Woodstock D4089 Machinist Square Set: Achieve Accurate Measurements with 4 Essential Pieces by John Miranda

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Three out of four proved correct

Pleasantly surprised by this set of machine angles. They are very well packed and sealed in plastic bags. The kit does not come with a case, but at this price you can complain. As others have mentioned there is a lot of oil on it but I see no reason to complain about something that protects tools and wipes off easily with a rag. I promise the worst defense options will be used. I bought a set of chisels from Revain that came with a paint protector that was almost impossible to remove even with acetone, paint thinner etc. Now to the essentials. are they square Well, in my case, three out of four were square. The large 6" square was misaligned by about 0.003" which is pretty bad and I returned the set for that reason. I may buy this set again to have a cheap second set on hand. I have no doubt that it is possible to get a set with all four perfect, which based on reviews is more common than what I received. -2-3 blocks. I used my cast iron table saw as a flat surface as well as a planing table. All four squares were as square as I could measure except for 6", unfortunately 6" was the main square I needed in this set. The 6" diameter was at least 0.003" under square, and the beam was slightly crooked, making it unusable for my needs. I was still tempted to keep the set but really wanted the 6 inch square to be exact. I probably should have requested a replacement instead of returning the entire set, but since they claim all squares are accurate to 0.0006 inches, that's how I felt. it was fair to return them. The finish on each square was excellent and only one had a tiny spot of rust which wasn't too bad. If I order another set I will update this review.

Pros
  • All the same width and thickness of beam and blade
Cons
  • Sparse instructions
