Review on JKS 8211 Spare Plate Mount by Hugh Starr

Fantastic product, best in spare wheel holders

I bought this for my 2004 Jeep Wrangler TJ Rubicon. The included instructions only apply to the Jeep Wrangler JK and JKU. I made a few modifications of my own to match my TJ. I installed this on a standard Jeep Wrangler TJ FYI tire carrier. First I had to drill a hole in the center of the stock tire holder between all the studs to hold the spare tire. I drilled this hole to route the wires for the light (no picture, sorry). Second, I connected the ground wire to one of the bearing screws on the busbar bracket. Third, I removed the bottom cover of the tailgate hinge and drilled a hole in the top right corner but where the plastic cover was still covering it. I drilled this for the power cord. Fourth, I connect the power wire to the power wire of my taillight (so that when I turn on the parking lights or all lights, the license plate light comes on). Fifth, I reinstalled the tailgate hinge cover and secured the power cord in a couple of places to keep it as hidden as possible. Sixth, I put the spare tire back on the trunk and made sure everything worked! The instructions will help even if you don't install it on JK or JKU. See my photos of the finished product. (Don't pay attention to the misplaced ORO taillight rings, that's what my iPhone camera always does in photos.) Also, the only downside to this product is that the light is very bright, so it shines on the ground a lot, but lights up at the same time they also perfectly match the license plate. Fantastic product with somewhat easy installation. The whole project only took me about two hours, but I spent most of my time figuring out how I'm going to do it and hiding the wires.

Pros
  • Durable finish
Cons
  • Good but not great
