After quitting the gym this winter, I decided to stock up on all the clothes I need for working out in the cold. Hats, gloves, thermal underwear, work. The balaclava was one of the items on the list and after much deliberation I settled on the Tough Balaclava Ski Mask. I have other durable gear that I use and the function of this particular headgear seems very open. At first I broke this balaclava during a heavy snowstorm when it was still snowing and the temperature was around 20 degrees. The material felt quite thin for my skin but provided adequate protection from the surrounding cold. The slit in the mask near the nose, still covered by a fabric patch, allows for easy breathing and vapor release. However, when paired with some ski goggles, the fabric of the mask will pinch your nose, making breathing a little difficult if you start gagging. I also noticed that the back of the balaclava doesn't fall as low as the front, meaning that if you pull or tug at the neck hard, you'll end up pulling it out of the coat it was meant to be tucked into. This has never happened to me though as I rarely jerk my neck when running, but heavier exercise can. Overall I'm happy with my purchase but the most important thing is if you sweat, if your nose runs or gets wrinkled then you need to wash this regularly. The fabric retains moisture quite well and the nose area can get a little rough after a chilly walk. Luckily this balaclava is machine washable, just use cold water, color safe detergent, no fabric softener and no bleach.
