This brand, OEM, Hoover changed their design to add a hard layer on the side where penetrating dirt enters. I personally prefer the old version, the whole filter is like a sponge. Facilitates thorough cleaning with very warm water and hand soap. Doing this in the sink with paper towels to dry is pretty quick. I have not experienced any degradation in lifespan/performance using my cleaning method.
