It converted 720 and 1080 resolution analog video to digital (depending on what you chose on the switch) allowing you to switch from RCA to HDMI devices (hoping my TV should then improve the video quality). As already mentioned, this device did not improve the video quality, in fact on my TV with a resolution of 720 and 1080 the quality looks much worse than when connected via RCA connections. So if you don't need an HDMI connection, don't expect video improvements from using it, then you can actually expect worse video. My source was laserdisc video, which is somewhat bordering on DVD quality. I'd say a lot better than VHS but not as good as a well made DVD, but many DVDs don't perform well and laserdiscs are actually better. The box is nowhere to be found if I ever need it again as I'm going back to the composite RCA cables which gave the best picture quality on my TV.
