Review on πŸ”Œ Enhanced Connectivity with X10 PAT01 16 Channel Transceiver by Greg Birchfield

Single house code support and short range limit for this device

They work pretty well once you're in the room with them. Send X10 signals through one of these X10 RF Pads and it will reflect the X10 signal into the power line. As expected, does not cross phase boundaries; You need one per phase or some kind of phase bridge. Having seen some particularly devastating capacitor failures, I'm not terribly interested in using something like this, so I end up needing too many of these. They don't seem to repeat the X10 power line signals in HF - they just seem to go from HF to the power line. This is limited to one house code. If you use multiple house codes, you may need one per phase for each house code. It would be nice to have a version that supports multiple house codes (using dip switches to indicate which house codes are best). I don't know what the range is according to the X10, but my experience with it has been disappointing. With an 8-device (18-button) X10 panel, line-of-sight (no obstacles) at 20 feet away is on the verge of reliable performance. Press the button on the control panel and there is every chance that it will work. Step back a few feet and your chances of getting it right the first time will decrease. Shadow it by running the signal through a wall, floor, or furniture, and it's also dramatically less likely to work reliably. Yes, I know the antenna can be extended. I'm testing the full length antenna, but I've tried other positions and found that they only shorten the distance at which it works.

Pros
  • I'm holding my fists
Cons
  • Hard to tell
