Review on OXO Adjustable Handheld Mandoline Slicer by Jeff Dawson

A few years (decades?) ago I bought a Matfer mandoline slicer and it's great. Nice big work surface, sharp edges etc. But it's quite big and difficult to clean so it needs to be kept in a specific place and I only took it out when I really needed it. A kind of pain. Endless thickness adjustment as well as the ability to cut into strips, although this has never been practical for me. We've moved so all my good cooking essentials are still in the boxes and when I saw that this little food slicer was $15 I thought I'd give it a try. Wow. That's great! I'm so glad I bought it. Sometimes I would like a larger canvas than Matfer, but not often. There are times I wish I had more thickness options, but not often. I now use this slicer 2-4 times a week, while I only got out my old mandolin once a month when I really needed to slice the onion thinly. Be sure to buy a Kevlar glove! I tore a big hole out of my nail on the first use but at least it wasn't my fingertip as I lost to Matfer a few times. If I find Matfer I will sell it. I might consider buying a larger OXO mandoline slicer to be able to chop a whole medium to large onion, but this form factor is a huge win. Edit: March 2019 The blade has dulled with regular use so I need to buy a new one. Onions and potatoes still cut well, but, for example, mushrooms turn into mush by a quarter. As they say, it's not good to eat. Be sure to buy Kevlar gloves for working with mandolins! In my experience, a tool for holding an item you're cutting is 50/50 at best.
