My Experience With This Unit Downtown

I have read reviews of this product and was first brought to my attention by a book called The Patriots by Survival blog editor JW Rawls. I ordered a base station and two walkie talkies. When these devices arrived I ran some handheld device tests and in the middle of a big city, on foot and in my car, the test showed good, clear reception at around 3000 feet. I've read that adding an external antenna to the base station increases the range of the base station. I then ordered an external VHF radio antenna, 100 foot coax cable and BNC connector. My existing TV antenna was old and I removed it and used the remaining 12 foot mast attached to an outside 3 inch vent pipe on the top ridge of my roof as a mounting point. No stretching was required. The actual top of the mast is about 38 feet. My brother-in-law works at a data center south and west of my house and could hear me when I was transmitting (8 miles in a straight line) away. To me that is phenomenal for this MURS frequency range. (Caution: There was interference in my transmission mixed with my words, but he could hear and understand me. I could also understand him when he answered over the walkie-talkie, also in the Dakota Alert. I think that by I order a pair Mobile Antennas would greatly increase the range and clarity of this setup Your experience may vary but mine far exceeded my expectations Police, Fire, Ambulance and Government Walkie-Talkies I have also worked in EMS for almost 20 years These little devices are worth what I paid for them to me, I suspect that in more rural areas the range would be better with fewer buildings to allow the signal to pass through or around them.

Pros
  • Send and Receive Messages Wirelessly - The Dakota Alert M538-BS Base Station acts as a transceiver that can send and receive messages from other MURS radios, such as the M538-HT Radio
