Can't start welder, can't handle equipment that needs a quick power change

So I was looking for a solution to allow my little 110V inverter welder to run off my truck's battery. My needs are minor, just need to burn through a few rods in 10-15 minutes to make minor repairs from time to time. I also wanted to be able to run the circular saw in the same setting. Both can be easily operated from 110V output voltage in a 20 ampere circuit. My circular saw says 14 amps. First, the device itself is quite large, but surprisingly light. It comes with 4 AWG short wires that are probably around 18 inches long. To start, I hooked it up to my truck with 20 foot 2 AWG jumper wires. At 170A they should have a voltage drop of about 1V. I thought it would be a little tricky but I tried anyway. The circular saw worked for about half a second, then the output voltage showed 0 V, then the saw motor rotated for 2-3 seconds. The saw didn't cut anything. I tried it with and without the truck running, didn't notice any difference except that the inverter showed 14.2v when the truck was running and 12.7v when the truck was not running, so that was it. I then tried the 4 AWG wire that came with this wire, at 170 amps it only dropped 0.17 volts (because the wire is so much shorter). The saw started much better. The video shows the voltage dropping to 98V at start up which isn't great but it's an inductive motor load so I wasn't too surprised. Again, the saw does not cut anything. welding device. The welder stayed on while I tried to weld, it sparked, then the filler wire stuck to the metal. This is exactly what happens when the current setting is too low. I've been playing around with the current settings and couldn't get any arc stabilization at all. I have confirmed that plugging the welder into the wall creates a good, stable arc and welds with ease. Finally, I hooked up my welder to a 6.5kW gasoline generator (7.5kW peak). He was good at shooting and adjusting the arc. So I'm torn about this device. It cannot start the saw without reducing the voltage, even with the short cords provided. It works, but I'd be nervous about cutting it. And it won't start my welder which was the main reason I bought it. The inverter claims 6,000 watts of peak power, but can't switch from low to high power fast enough to run a saw or DC inverter welder. Keep in mind that the welder works fine on my house's 20 amp grid. So it can't draw more than 2400W at any point or it will fail. It just doesn't seem powerful enough for what it's advertised to be. This combined with the fact that I can't use it for the reasons I bought it means I will be returning it.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
