I bought this to teach my granddaughter how to sew. I thought it was a great idea because it's simple, lightweight, and relatively inexpensive compared to others. It also has the name Janome on it, which I trust. I used the machine myself before telling her about it because I wanted to see how it works. I find this to be a good "extra" machine for performing functions quickly and easily so you don't have to pull out a big, heavy machine for those tasks. When you create a new project that requires more than simple stitches like buttonholes, hidden seams, etc., you're going to have to pull out a big ol' machine. Although I think that it is not the best option for beginners. What I like: Works well on medium weight fabrics. It is lightweight and easy to fold and take out of storage. Get started quickly and easily. Easy spooling, easy threading, connect and remove cords. This machine has enough basic stitches to complete an easy selection of commonly needed tasks. What I didn't like - no way, you have to keep it in the box it came in. (I knew that when I ordered it.) No options for heavy or light fabrics. (Although I really wasn't expecting that for the price.) There is no light in the work area. I've always appreciated this feature on every other sewing machine I've used. In my opinion, this is also a feature that sewing beginners need. (Helps you see where the stitches go and where the thread goes to the needle. ) No speed control. This is a must for beginners in my opinion. I thought the presser foot would allow you to adjust the speed but it doesn't. (The speed control allows beginners to focus on straight stitches, gives them better control, and is IMO safer for them.) In summary, it's not worth the $65 I spent on it just because it's inconvenient for beginners . It's also not a big deal for me to pull out my first Janome (which I'll teach my granddaughter) for basic functions. ) In summary, it's not worth the $65 I paid for it just because it's inconvenient for beginners.
