Review on Enhance Your Reptile Habitat with the Penn-Plax Reptology Turtle Topper and Extension Clips – Ultimate Basking Platform for Standard Size Tanks by Monica Young

Great concept; but had to be modified for the large tortoise

With my rather large tortoise I found it necessary to modify the topper to allow it to climb. I first used a hacksaw to enlarge the hole by cutting off the plastic on both sides. Secondly, the ramp was too weak and wobbly for her. I originally used aquarium sealer in the slot to stabilize it and also added a perspex rod taped to the bottom of the ramp and the bottom of the platform. None of these mods worked as it knocked over the ramp in one of the excited states. Now I've added one of my old "shelves" (the plexiglass that hangs in the tank with the rock attached) on a level just below the ramp. The ramp is held in place with tape over the groove. I also removed part of the underwater shelf and attached it under the ramp. (It's hanging out of the hole, also secured with tape.) This allows the ramp to move, but not too much. The turtle can now swim up to the ramp, use the stone shelf to help her up the ramp. Also, when the large turtle is active, I found it necessary to attach the topper to the tank by gluing (silicone again) suction cups. to the glass and added tape. Finally, to reduce the splashing, I added an aquarium lid (the standard with a light that I didn't even plug in). These changes seem to be working and it looks good because the tape is black to match the topper and aquarium trim.
