My collimator arrived in a large box with no packaging material. In fact, he was scattered all the time while he was out. When I unpacked it, the collimator turned on normally, but it didn't. To check, place two equally sized, strong (preferably metal) objects close together and place the collimator at the top between the two objects so that it can rotate freely but not move sideways. Turn on the laser and let it hit the wall about 10-15 feet away. Take a sticky pad and stick it where the laser will hit and mark the exact spot on the sticky pad where the laser will hit. Now rotate the collimator slowly. If the laser moves away from the marked point, it is misaligned. There are three small Allen keys that you can use to make adjustments. You have to play with it until you get it right and the laser doesn't move when you rotate it. It took a while but I was able to rebuild my laser. After I was done, the collimation of my 10" Dobsonian was pretty hard and dry. I relied on YouTube videos for instructions and managed to line everything up correctly. My point is that you shouldn't just take the laser out of the box and collimate your telescope. Test beforehand and adjust if necessary. Do not use an uncollimated laser on the scope!
