New Life for a Mid-2011 iMac

I knew my mid-2011 iMac, a machine that had largely been replaced in my workflow by much newer hardware, was still alive. The bottleneck was the aging mechanical hard drive, which simply couldn't handle the stringent requirements of full disk-level encryption of FileVault 2 or any of the more recent versions of macOS, although the RAM and CPU still could. The solution was to replace it with an SSD, but I didn't want to hack the hardware for that. Enter this external Thunderbolt Transcend drive. It's incredibly small and handles the demands of FileVault 2 and macOS Sierra with ease. It's very similar to a new computer or the performance I first experienced in mid-2011. Some reviews note that the disc heats up. In my experience, it hardly heats up noticeably, even with intensive use. Other reviews mention that the Thunderbolt cable that comes with the drive isn't great, so as a precaution I bought the cable direct from Apple to use with the drive and can't comment on that claim . All in all I am very satisfied with this purchase.
