A few months ago I took my pickup truck to a factory recall for a deployed airbag. To access the airbag, you must remove the top portion of the plastic dashboard on the passenger side. The serviceman noticed a crack in my dashboard and I had to sign a waiver in case the dashboard cracked more during the repair. Well it isn't; and now my wife is probably safer because without repair there was a risk of unnecessarily unfolding the bag. I didn't think much about a cracked dashboard until recently when I came across an ad for this plastic welder and thought why not! Maybe it could be a worthwhile repair.β Looking at the pictures, I could see the welder using various shaped metal staples that get hot enough to melt and embed the plastic. Staples bridge the gap and provide strength; The plastic welding wires are then melted and fill in the gap when it is wide enough and a flat smoothing tip is used to even out the humps created by the welding wires; or in the case of a narrow gap, a flat tip is used to melt and melt the plastic on the sides of the gap so that it is closed. A final sanding will likely be required, especially for a clumsy guy like me, to smooth out the repair. Invisible repairs are unlikely to be possible unless the plastic used to fill the gap is the exact same color and texture as the dash. But even then it would take someone more artistic than me to bring it to perfection. The parts list says three plastic welding rods are included, but they weren't; So I found a source for wands and ordered them. I may or may not need these poles, but at least I'll have them. I now confess that I am not an artist and do not expect miracles; So any structural improvement to my dashboard will be an asset to me. I know there are people out there who could do much better repairs than I could with this gear, so I won't intentionally downplay my guess due to my lack of artistic ability. Warnings here... In the wrong hands, this can do more harm than good. For example, if I held the heat long enough to push the clip through the plastic into my airbag, I would endanger my wife's life. What if someone came up with the idea of using the signature design on their arm as a piece of jewelry? Oh! It hurts just thinking about it. Consider yourself forewarned. This thing generates heat and is not a toy. Of course, as the old saying goes, the proof is in the pudding; So it's high time to try out the plastic welding machine. I made a video of my dashboard repair; However, my phone's camera kept turning off due to overheating in the truck and the video was split into multiple videos. I was supposed to turn on the air conditioning but didn't. It takes a lot of time to create a video from five to six small videos, so I'll have to come back later with review editing and turn on the video at that point. I will say that the unit worked exactly as stated by the manufacturer and the only fault I could find other than the missing weld wires was the inclusion of the wrong type of staple cutter. The included wire cutters can't even cut the protruding wires with a surface, instead leaving the ends sticking out almost ΒΌ inch, making smoothing nearly impossible. Electronics technicians typically use wire cutters that cut protruding wires to the surface and that should be included in this set. As it is you will have to supply your own. Another suggestion I would like to make is that the gun is battery powered and not loaded with a 120v power cord. So it would be much easier to use it in the field. If you use it all the time at the table, the cord won't hurt you, but it's not that convenient in the garden. Overall I can say this is a good buy and a quality product, which is what it should do. If you are looking for a plastic welding machine, this is one to consider. And please...don't let my lack of artistic ability dissuade you from purchasing this item.
