Sometimes I tend to experiment when trying something new and when I decided to make spaetzle I turned it into something of a project. I watched a few YouTube videos to get a rough idea of what the dough should look like (short answer: liquid is better) and the many different tools you can use to make pasta of different shapes and sizes. There is no "official" size or shape for pasta, one of the videos I particularly enjoyed was of a woman cutting raw dough into boiling water with a knife. found easiest to use. The dough can be spooned over the perforated metal board into the mixing bowl and with just a few strokes the entire dough drips cleanly into the boiling water below. It's helpful to put on a kitchen glove and hold it over the pot, as the steam can be uncomfortable. However, the process is very fast and undemanding, so your hand should not be in position for very long. I actually had my son hold it while I scooped out the batter with a spoon, which of course was the easiest method of all. So if you can socialize the event, make use of those extra hands. I have used it all by myself and it works very well.
