I'm new to turning but not new to woodworking. After reading the reviews on this set I figured if I wasn't paying $100 a bit it would be a good start. I was wrong. All of them have a rough factory sharpening. A pair of notches have large jags on the blades and one has a distinct ridge. I can fix those potholes. I'm not new to reshaping nicks on a belt sander. I do this a lot because I love buying vintage cutouts and repainting them. But these are solid, well-crafted notches to begin with. They should have lasted more than a lifetime (most of mine are 100-150 years old). This is cheap junk. It takes a lot of work to make them usable. I do not recommend it to the absolute beginner who has no grinding experience. I'm not even sure I want to take the time to remake them and maybe just return the set to Revain. As a beginner, spend money on quality gouges (buy once, cry once) and then get a super cheap set. , like the $25 Harbor Freight to practice sharpening so you don't ruin your expensive tools.
