The steel behaved like unhardened mild steel. The first one I tried was the smallest one on a pine tree. Thought he'd better cut it than a flat head screwdriver. But this was not the case. Immediately rolled up the edge. In shock I thought this was just a case, maybe someone forgot to listen to how to treat them. So I put some maple on the lathe and tried a different tool. I found the carbide quirky and catchy for what I do so I had to do a proper HSS dip. You should get a comfortable sharpening (definitely don't learn to sharpen on a $90 notch first).
