as a newbie on the lathe, I didn't want to spend $400-500 on lathe tools, and then I realized I didn't want to anymore. This is a great starter kit and if managed properly can really be a good kit for life! sharp right out of the box, but depending on the wood you're sharpening, you may need to sharpen them. I've used it on poplar and haven't had any sharpness issues. I gave it 4/5 stars because I saw some discoloration/overheating on the parting tool tips and both bevel chisels, but being new I might just abuse them. I'm 11 steins old so you can rate me. Still, my project turned out better than expected! Definitely worth buying UPDATE JULY 11, 2019 Bought a good grinder/sharpener set. Tools, when sharp, are great and can get "streamers" above 220 grit. The downside is the metal is cheap so it overheats quickly and dulls even faster. Just keep a sharpener nearby (just for touching up) and it's still worth buying (I've used it on poplar, cedar, red oak, and water oak).
