They clean easily with a brush and the narrower straws have a lip to keep the straw from falling out of the lid you're drinking from. Wider straws have not yet been used, but I think there will be no trouble filling them with mini chips or strawberry pieces. They are strong so you can easily shake your shake or smoothie. I have cloth straw covers so each car has a set, plus my lunch box.
