This is not the product I am most critical of, although you can put together a better sanding system for less money. It's a pretty clever marketing strategy by Work Sharp for this accessory set. This kit should definitely be included with the base system, especially the belt, which is an almost essential step in sharpening any blade. If that means increasing the price of the underlying system, then so be it. But people need to be aware of the total costs they're taking on before jumping in, rather than holding back fairly important parts just to shamefully encourage more people to buy at a lower price, unaware that the total price is at least 50% higher will be than they have already invested. Without this set of accessories, Work Sharp's managed system just isn't worth the investment, even if it comes anywhere close to its asking price. And with the kit, the total cost is in the range where it's practically more profitable for you to build your own facility. Because it doesn't take much experience before the controlled parts of this system feel like they're just getting in the way. The two pieces in this upgrade kit, the extra thin plate and the lanyard, are essential, if not essential. just parts that most use for the routine maintenance of their blades. Every other plate in the system is a must if you have a very dull or damaged blade. It's not a bad system for getting your feet wet, but know that you'll definitely need this kit for the first knife you sharpen. And once you've gained a little experience, you might decide to go for something bigger, unless you're carrying around small binders, which these disk sizes are clearly optimized for.
