I bought the upgrade kit and the standard sharpening set together mainly because of the flat diamond blades. So far I have sharpened quite a few knives, chisels and wood carving tools. I've tried a few sets and this is the best I've found. Diamond blades cut and remove metal, allowing you to get down to business much faster than ceramic blades. I've just written my review of WSGSS and it wouldn't be an acceptable system for anything but the most basic of sanding jobs without an upgrade kit. With the upgrade kit you can upgrade EVERYTHING.
