Review on πŸ’ͺ Powerful and Precise: BLACK+DECKER BDERO200C Corded Random Orbital Sander by Jarrett Love

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great sander, good performance, great price, a few flaws

This B&D sander is slightly more powerful than my 20 year old Dewalt. It is rated at 2.4 amps versus 2.0 for Dewalt. I also like the grippy grip texture. Dewalt has a smooth texture that is sometimes harder to grasp. I also like the switch to B&D. The Dewalt has a small rocker switch in a protective plastic case that makes it difficult to use but also offers some protection from damage. On the other hand, the B&D has a few drawbacks compared to my 20-year-old Dewalt: First, the dust extraction is significantly less efficient. You can see from the photos I posted that the dust box is significantly smaller on the B&D. If you look at the 8 holes that the sandpaper is attached to, there is some sort of plastic plate there that greatly reduces the size of the holes. Why? No idea. In addition, the Dewalt came with a universal adapter to connect to a shop vacuum or central dust collection system. B&D only comes with a case so I had to make my own adapter. Therefore, when I connect each of them to the vacuum, there is a SIGNIFICANT increase in airflow through the Dewalt. It actually "sticks" to the tree before turning it on. Second, Velcro is thinner and less flexible. You can see that again in the photos. It's about twice as thin, so doesn't offer the same dampening effect, which is important if you're going to get a finer grit above 220. Dewalt is also tapered at the edges, allowing for a little flex in certain spots or pushing. in a small place. This makes B&D less versatile for these applications. A few other small points: First, the electrical cord strain relief is much better on the Dewalt. It's thicker and twice as long. See photos. Second, the central "throat" of the B&D is much wider. This makes it difficult to hold. As mentioned, the B&D has a nice grippy texture that's great for holding on to. But in the low position, Dewalt's narrow "throat" makes control much easier. In general, the B&D grinder creates a pleasant feeling of hardness. Build quality and materials are surprisingly good for this price range. But still, based on the points above, I don't expect it to be as durable as Dewalt. It's a bit louder than the Dewalt, which is probably due to the larger motor. It doesn't really matter since I always wear earmuffs when grinding. Overall, this is a good little grinder, especially at this price point ($34.99 at the time of writing). It is clearly intended for the DIY/hobbyist market. While it doesn't compare well to Dewalt, it's a great product for the intended market and at a price to match. Of course, I'm not going to leave my trusty Dewalt just yet. But I'll start using this B&D when I need a little more power to quickly remove stuff. I will still use Dewalt for finer grit as it has a thicker velcro pad, better control and much better dust collection.
