Review on HearthPro Black Indoor Infrared Stove Fireplace Heater - Freestanding 5-Sided, Model SP5621 by Maxwell Thomas

Nice but not very efficient.

My wife loves this thing. The chassis is nice, the fire effect is clearly fake, but "don't really try" - so what more accurately imitates fire can easily fall into the "scary valley" but it's not: this is clearly a fire effect, isn't it artificially the fire. I'm a little less convinced. As a heater, it's pretty primitive: it generates some heat, yes, but not much - and it doesn't have a thermostat, just a row of knobs to turn it on and off. (For aesthetes, yes: you can also run the display without heating.) We installed it on some tiles because the heating hangs underneath, but in practice the heat – as much as there is – is conducted out nicely, and the Floor doesn't even warm up noticeably. My device didn't fare very well: it took a few bumps in transit, and when I turned it on there was an awkward continuous clicking sound. I opened the case and found that the flame effect was created by reflecting light off a slowly rotating metal rod with reflectors, and this rod was not attached to the sides and slid out of the case. Came back fine but when I opened the thing up a second time I noticed that the entire back panel had also been knocked out of its normal position and the light was visible from the side. In other words, the thing isn't really all that complex, but it's relatively easy to maintain. It's made from thin metal and thick plastic, so it's about as cheap as you'd expect, but feels solid enough to be strong enough as a display element and heater.

Pros
  • Handsfree
Cons
  • Very expensive
