Many of the bad reviews about this air chuck reflect user impatience rather than product performance. Notches are inside the black "Capturing" ring. They are designed to grip the threads of the cap on the rod shank. This is accomplished by pressing the cartridge against the stem valve and moving the knurled ring forward. When the black plastic ring successfully engages the shaft thread, the knurled ring "clicks". After that, the cartridge remains tough and airtight. I, too, took a few initial tries to get the thing working until I figured out what's going on. Now connected to a Milton S-505 tire pump, I can operate it with one hand.
