Review on πŸ”₯ Enhance Telescope Performance with Thousand Oaks Four-Channel Digital Dew Heater Control Unit – Compatible with Heater Band/s by Omar Obong

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Poorly designed control box enclosure - moisture and spiders can get in.

When first used, the controller had a short circuit on the circuit board in the power cord. He was left outside for a few nights but under a protective cover. I sent the unit to Thousand Oaks but they refused to honor the warranty stating that the circuit board looked like it had been exposed to salt water or some other corrosive material. They checked the heater bands (different brand) but they were fine. The power supply was a Pyramid 15 amp; I applied a multimeter to it several times and with different loads - always just over 13 volts. The Thousand Oaks email excluding the warranty mentioned that there was also a small web around the rusty/arching area, but said that this did not contribute to the failure. The burned block was returned to me at my request. After several days of thinking (not constantly, but often), I decided to follow the "footsteps of the spiders". Miraculously, woven silk is electrically conductive and is even used to make microwires for medical applications. Google and search for an article from the University of Oxford (yep, famous and respected in England) for 2013-2014. outdoors for more than a few hours, you can apply a VERY LIGHT gossamer solution to the circuit board and/or seal the entire assembly in a ziplock bag. Although Thousand Oaks offers rubber plugs for the heater band connectors, if the heater bands are left plugged in, there is plenty of wiggle room for spiders to climb into. And the DIP switch access hole at the end has no plug at all. Other reviewers have mentioned potential problems with water ingress into the hull; it's just an interesting twist on that concern. Poor spider - I hope the static spark jumped over quickly and painlessly.
