Actually the compass works well

I'm writing this review to counter the opinion of others who say compasses are rubbish. It's not the manufacturer's fault if you don't know how to use a compass properly, and there are plenty of websites to learn more about this seemingly simple tool. In one review, the author uses a cell phone to determine true north and two compasses, one about 11 degrees east of north and the others exactly opposite. The compasses are clearly working correctly - one of them finds magnetic north, which differs from true north depending on where you live, but is on the west coast of the US at about 11 degrees east longitude. The other compass is simply reverse polarity which can be corrected with a magnet (see website for reverse polarity compasses). Using the compass indoors, near large metal objects, near mobile phones, or near other compasses will interfere with the magnet. There is actually a "correct position" for using the compass and you must make sure there is no obstacle. When I tried my compasses indoors, they wobbled as expected. So of course I took them outside one by one to look at them. Both headed for magnetic north. The case is actually more durable than other cheap compasses I've had. The point of this review isn't to avoid those bags because you think the "freebie" compass is rubbish. It is not. The second point is to learn how to use the compass correctly, since it is not reliable.

Pros
  • Hands free operation
Cons
  • Definitely a bad product
