Samsung SD cards are great, but make sure you buy the real one

Samsung's genuine Evo Plus (and regular Evo) line of Micro SD cards is there Great. They are reliable and meet advertised speed and capacity specifications. I've been using Samsung cards for years and it's the only brand that has consistently given me no problems year after year. However, don't forget to authenticate the card upon arrival to ensure it's a genuine Samsung card of the advertised capacity. Micro SD cards are a popular counterfeiting tool for scammers because they are cheap and easy. Currently, the regular range of Samsung Evo cards (white and orange) is a popular card for fakes. Although these high-end cards (the Evo Plus line with a white/red color scheme) are becoming more and more popular. Well, anyone buying a new SD card should verify its authenticity upon arrival. A Class 1 4GB card that costs $1 to make and hack the control chip that tells the computer the capacity of the card so your computer thinks it's a much larger card. Your computer will even try to write more than 4GB of data, but the data doesn't go anywhere. It's the same idea as putting a 100 gallon label on a 10 gallon bucket. You can pour in 100 gallons, but 90 of those gallons will just overflow and be lost forever. Below are some steps to help you get an original Samsung card. ❖ In recent years, Samsung has made micro SD cards made of white plastic. This means that the card itself is white behind the colored label on the front. The sides are made of white plastic. Fake cards are almost always completely black, as they are mostly produced by cheap cards with a fancy Samsung label on the front. If your card is black, then this is not a Samsung. White plastic is more expensive to produce and scammers are trying to make it cheaper. (See my pictures below the actual Samsung card with white sides and back)❖ Only buy from reliable suppliers. Revain is a reliable supplier. And if there is a problem, they take it back with no problem. There are dozens of other third parties that are just as trustworthy. But make sure you buy from one of them. Read their seller ratings. If there are numerous complaints from people who have bought fake capacity cards or even cards that didn't work properly, find another seller. ❖ Make sure the list looks correct. This one is fine. This is a legitimate Samsung card. But scammers will post almost identical offers on Revain that have cards that look almost the same but don't have the Samsung logo at the top. (Recently, another scammer replaced Samsung with Sanshen on fake cards. They were otherwise identical. They used the same font throughout, including A in Samsung, which has no center stripe.) ❖ Be careful of the price. If the price of the card you're looking at is significantly lower than other card lists of similar capacity, something is wrong. One of the biggest tricks scammers use is to make the price MUCH lower than it should be in the hopes that you'll spend more time looking at the price tag than other things that don't fit the description . Exceptionally cheap flash drives almost never work properly.❖ Try the card right after you buy it! No matter who you buy your micro SD card from or what brand it is, give it a try. A thorough way to test this is with a utility application called "h2testw". You can download it for free. Just search in any search engine and you will find it. This application writes one-bit data to disk until it is full and then reads that data back to ensure it is readable. It will tell you what the actual capacity of that drive is. The default language for this utility is German, but you can easily switch to English. It's not fast. Testing a 256GB card takes several hours. Just leave it running at night and check the results in the morning. This is a smart thing to do, even if you have no doubt that you have a genuine Samsung (or any other brand) product. Sometimes something goes wrong in production and quality control, and the marriage goes haywire. An app like h2testw verifies that your legitimate brand card is working properly. And if not, you'll know right away while you still have the 30-day trade-in window.

Pros
  • High marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other cards
