With last year's (2020) events around the world, like so many others around the country, I've become a fan of homemade cocktails. One of the most important elements of any cocktail is ice, much like the alcohol/liquid you pour into your drink, so I've been looking for a while for a way to make my own crystal clear ice in the comfort of my own home. After some research online, I found that the best method for making pure ice at home is by directional freezing. Plenty of YouTube videos recommend taking a small, portable chest freezer (which ironically you can also buy here at Revain), fill it with water, pop it in the freezer and wait. I'm here to tell you that the OnTheRocks Ice Maker ups the ante tenfold, although you still can. First of all, this ice maker uses the same directional freezing method, but thanks to the molded ice shape, you don't have steps to cut the ice and/or cut it to any size you want. The molds are very easy to use and the pieces of ice separate instantly without the need to peel, puncture or otherwise remove the ice molds from the molds. The clear plastic container slides in and out of the thick rubber body so easily that you can check the progress at any time during the freeze season. You can pull out the plastic tray, check how much of the base is set, and if it hasn't already, put it back in without a headache. You just can't do it with a simple chest freezer that will give you inconsistent results. When the ice is ready, simply take it out by removing the plastic insert, placing it upside down in the sink and pouring water directly over it. That. After a very short time, the ice molds are ready to form ice cubes or balls. A little bonus for everyone to take into account, which the company doesn't advertise, is that not only do you have sculpted ice molds ready, you also have loads of ice "shards" and sculpted chunks of ice hidden under the molds that also crystal clear. I can see myself saving them for some fancy transparent crushed ice in the future. As for the pre-made ice shapes, the cubes are almost perfect, the only side that isn't 100% flat is the one exposed to the air on the surface. Because the spheres are made by joining two mold pieces together, the spheres have a small seam around them as well as tiny protrusions from the holes that the mold uses to fill the cavities with water. But these tiny bumps can either be left as they are or simply removed with household tools such as a small knife, a small metal file (clean and food safe of course!) etc. BTW the molds in my picture show some natural frost from the freezer after I put them in plastic bags for storage. As soon as you pour liquid/water on them or let them temper, they will be crystal clear again. All in all, if I could give this product 6 product launches, I would. Hello/Slente!
