Review on πŸ’‘ Enhanced Protection: SurgeX SA-82 Flatpak Surge Eliminator Safeguards Your Electronics by Keith Alvord

Absolutely invincible stronghold for your expensive electronics

I first bought one of these after reading a review of serial mode protection on GCN. I was a little dismayed to see a couple of the surge protectors burst inside and wanted something I wouldn't have to replace again. Well I found it. These things not only keep everything in top shape during thunderstorms and running washer-dryers. (These things cause more surges in your home than outside influences) but they also include surge shutdowns - other surge protectors are lauded for self-destructing in prolonged surge situations (IF they end up saving your running devices. They don't always end up doing, what they do.) They just turn off the power until everything is back to normal. It's built like a truck and obviously built to last. After having this in front of my LCD TV and my *valuable* games console collection for a few months, I bought another one to protect my computing/networking gear. This particular model is designed for flat screen TVs, but its size allows it to be hidden anywhere. Mounting brackets are an added bonus. Another point: I've seen some "experts" on professional AV forums saying that MOV-based protection is more than adequate. I've been fortunate to work at a university that uses thousands of standard MOV-based protectors, and as I speak I have quite a few of those with burned MOVs. I show them to people before I show them these little guys. These "experts" also lost all credibility when they assumed that every power protection device (including this type) revolves around a good earth shunt. No serial mode device relies on power-to-ground shunting at all.
