The nut embedded in the plastic was torn off because I had one mounted on my bike. I couldn't tighten them. I solved the problem by putting a washer between the plastic and the nut and it's fine, it still holds up after multiple rides for 30+ miles cross country. Looks good. Update, the seller has contacted me to send a replacement with a new and improved bar end design. Also got some Presta valve caps as gifts, best customer service I've had on Amazon. The new rod fit perfectly into the end and had no problem tightening it up tight!
