Review on Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch Can Opener - Black & Chrome (Discontinued) by Jill Bennett

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Proper placement of the glass is why this works!

Let's start with some people saying that this can opener doesn't work no matter how hard they try, or it just randomly stops opening cans even when they sit and twist it - that is probably not the fault of the can opener. Although most of the reviews are 5 stars, I also noticed that they have quite a large number of 1 star reviews which made me hesitant to purchase. So if anyone has the same doubts, read on. I gave it to my mother for Christmas and didn't know anything about it. I just took it out of the box, set it up for her and started testing it on jars with opening lids and jars without lids. Even someone who has no idea how it works can use it, so yes, it's convenient and easy to use. The first jar I opened came off easily. Clean Cut I was able to run my finger across the rim without cuts or sharp edges. It was great to take a risk without even knowing if I was going to be circumcised or not to be honest. It was a blind bullet but luckily as advertised - no sharp edges :). Second, I tried a can of Campbell's pop-top spaghetti. The lid came off perfectly and wasn't a problem so yes it opens as advertised! Thirdly, this is where the problem started to surface and I was very afraid that my can opener would be useless as stated by other reviews. I opened a can of tuna and it spun as usual, but the lid didn't come off. I kept pushing and lifting with the fork, but it didn't budge. It even had a continuous blade line, the sound changed when the lid was removed etc. Of course I was confused. However, I tried again and blocked it for sure. This time I put the glass in correctly, making sure the blade was on the glass and locked into place. I pushed the button and the lid popped open. So many people who say the can opener doesn't work are most likely holding the can on the blade incorrectly. So don't worry about the can opener not working. Just make sure you position and pin it properly and wa-la-la the perfect cut :)
