My 2 year old loves trains and can operate the switches on this train. He loves that he can move it and stop it and is constantly coupling and uncoupling the dolly he is towing. The train actually starts moving before the switch/lever is fully on, which can be annoying as it will start moving, then depart before it is fully on, then stop again. So you kind of have to hold it down when shifting or make it fast, which can be a bit difficult for younger kids, but my son can still do it most of the time.
