Review on πŸ”§ Enhance Engine Performance with MSD 8680 Adjustable Timing Controller by Thomas Chalecki

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Unreliable, abandoned immediately after warranty expired!

When this MSD Ignition 8680 Timing Controller worked, it worked well and I was able to adjust the timing from the driver's seat for various conditions. When I was stuck in traffic, I could increase the time so the engine ran a little cooler. If I needed a higher idle on a cold engine (no choke, racing carburetor) I would just increase the time. For optimal performance, I could adjust the timing accordingly. It allows an adjustment of 15 degrees. It's relatively easy to install and I use it with a working MSD stick spreader and an MSD Digital 6 Plus ignition box. Overall the engine (502cc, 600hp) ran great and started easily with no kickback (20 degrees lag from the Digital 6 Plus ignition unit). The engine started perfectly even when warm. Overall an excellent device with one notable exception. A year after purchase it no longer works. I doubt it has 500 miles on it. The device is installed in the cabin, so it is never hot or humid in it (in any case, the car does not drive in the rain). I really expected more from MSD as they should be the best. So that's $150 down the drain and I hate to think about having to buy a new one every year. If you're willing to risk cost and downtime in the event of an outage, go for it. I need this system for this particular car so I will be buying two to have a spare in case it breaks down again. I sent in a defective MSD controller and was pleasantly surprised when the repair cost was only $11.50! But with shipping both ways, the total was about $35, which is still not bad for a $150 controller repair. I changed my rating to 3 stars due to the very cheap repair costs.
