Review on SureFlap Microchip Cat Door White by Amber Allen

Lots of work and no results - poor and unreliable design

We bought this cat door because a raccoon got through our magnetic door. We hoped the double scan entry would scare the raccoons away. We built a door into a wooden door and slipped the cats through so the chip reader could register them. It worked for a while. But when they installed a new garage door with a very thin metal skin on one side, the device stopped working. Following the company's instructions, we bought an adapter and cut a much larger round hole in the garage door. At the time, the device only worked for one in three cats. We also bought special tags hoping they would work. It was still very difficult for the cats to get through the door. It often took them 4 or 5 attempts. (We know this because we installed a night camera to monitor their movements and the movements of the raccoons.) Conclusion: Three times the raccoon managed to get through the locked door. Most of the time, our cats couldn't do this. I spent about 6 hours installing and troubleshooting only to find that the door didn't latch from the inside - you could open it with a wave of your hand - and it was still very difficult for the cats to get in. These cats are microchipped and very used to using magnetic cat flaps. The labels are huge by the way (50 cent size) and poorly designed - they get stuck in wet cat food when eating and are always dirty, now I have a big round hole in my brand new garage door and I need to find another device for cats. I contacted the company on Saturday. Customer service is closed on weekends, so I haven't received a response from them for four days.
