Good for the size but don't believe the bass ads

I've tossed between these and one of the smallest Audioengines models. I chose them because of the price at the time. For the placement I wanted, I needed small speakers like the ones in this row. If I had more space I wouldn't even consider them because for the money if you can increase them it's much better. However, they are pretty good. Crisp and clean, lots of highs and mids. But there's almost no bass, and what's there quickly becomes distorted. So you definitely need a subwoofer if you like bass at all. Given their similar size, I expected the performance to be on par with the Sonos 1/One speaker line, but they didn't even come close. But what they can do, with or without a subwoofer, is fill the room with sound. The soundstage is great and I really like its sound in everything I do on my computer. I connected them via USB because my computer has nasty electrical noises from the built-in audio output. Well, with all the praise, I just can't believe they haven't built in a high-pass filter - either manual or automatic - that can be activated when a subwoofer is connected. That's the only thing I don't like about these speakers. Why? Because even though the subwoofer handles all the bass, the woofers in the YU2 still struggle to reproduce those low frequencies and when you turn it on you can hear it distorting. Not good and a HUGE oversight on Kanto's part. I knew this was an issue based on other reviews and decided to give it a try for the price and with a built in DAC. But even so, it's still disappointing. I had a small issue with materials that is worth mentioning. There is some kind of glue left on my passive speaker from putting the dust cap on. It doesn't affect anything, but since there are no grilles for these speakers I only occasionally see things that shouldn't be there. Otherwise I find the materials very nice and aesthetically pleasing. But as I said, overall I am satisfied and look forward to using it for a long time. They've been pretty good so far!
