Review on 🚴 MTX Rear Bike Basket: Optimize Your Search! by Louis Mechtak

Revainrating 3 out of 5

The MTX mount is excellent and there is plenty of room in the basket.

Basket construction is good and solid. Other reviews mention the handle rattling, however the handle is designed to snap firmly onto the edge of the basket and prevent rattling. The grip would have been nice as it is a bit heavy on the hands. The basket is big and that is the main reason for the three stars. The basket is handy for visiting a farmer's market or a quick spree, as well as for storing jackets and lunch on a walk. The downside is that it interferes with the fit and cannot be fixed. This was on both a hybrid road bike and cruiser with Topeak MTX racks. Our solution was to buy longer rack arms (see image) and install the rack by tilting it back so the basket could hook to the front of the rack. This shifts the weight behind the rear axle, causing the bike to lean more when the pannier is loaded. It would be better if the front of the basket had a larger cutout to fit under the seat. I'm surprised Topeak's engineers didn't consider how this basket would fit on their racks when the rack was installed properly. After several trips and a spill we decided the rack needed to be level and we needed to look for an alternative. The solution might even be to install a front basket and lose the rear rack entirely.

Pros
  • Solid construction
Cons
  • I really have no complaints about it, everything is fine
