Review on Sony CDP CE500 5 Disc Changer Black Review by Rob Rogers

TWO MAJOR FAILURES Best in Home Audio

My first unit failed because it stayed in read mode for 96 seconds before playing a CD. My replacement works fine except it doesn't remember where you've been when it turns off. It turns off 30 minutes after a break or inactivity. It will automatically go into standby mode and turn off after a few seconds. I just spoke to SONY and it is normal and cannot be bypassed. So when I'm listening to a CD and I want to stop it, I have to write down on paper where I've been because that automatically returns to the beginning of the CD. I just bought an $80 boombox from Sony and it remembers where I've been and automatically jumps back to that track. Why can't this $150 block do the same? I have complained to SONY and they will send it up the food chain hoping future models will be designed differently. The second problem is that the device is not in PAUSE mode for more than 30 minutes. I have a couple of CDs that I copied from cassettes that I didn't add a lot of track markers to. I usually stop the car for maybe a few days and then pick it up right where I was before. Now I can't, but they let me hold me hostage until the end of the CD or write down how many minutes I'm on the CD and then fast forward a long time until I get to that point. This is the BIGGEST annoyance. Possibly a long pause of the machine is harmful to the machine. Well, let it be OUR decision, not Sony. If it breaks soon, they'll just sell more CD players, right? What's the problem with that?
