This weird trick

I hate spending big bucks on curtains. They are as cheap as possible with reasonable quality. For those who don't understand this, there is a tricky maneuver. I suggest if this doesn't get as dark in the room as you were hoping for: you can layer them on top of each other. Before attaching them to the rod, simply slide one curtain directly over the other and then slide both curtains over the curtain rod at the same time (the rod goes through two grommets at the same time). The curtains stay together when hung. You have to get pretty close and look closely to see what's going on. It's not a perfect solution, but it's pretty impressive. If it's still not dark enough, I'd suggest a tie rod with an opaque fabric underneath (or press down and hang a flat, ill-fitting sheet. The quality of the material is better than most curtains you'll find, and if you hang it carefully, no one will likely notice that it's not really a normal transparent panel.) If you don't have a tie rod, a small elastic cord can be used, carefully stretched between the ends of the main cornice.

Pros
  • 2 inch grommets
Cons
  • Not sure
